Does your horse need a new blanket, but you are not sure which size fits best? When buying a horse blanket, it is very important for your horse that the size is right. A blanket that is too small or too tight increases the chance of chafing. A blanket that is too big will quickly sag crooked, causing the blanket to break in the long run and making it uncomfortable for the horse. The best way to determine the blanket size is to measure your horse's upper and lower length.
The upper length of a blanket is measured between the withers and the tail start (size A). It is important to measure to the start of the tail and not over it. As soon as a blanket hangs over the tail start, it is too big and often pulls backwards. The lower length is measured from the middle of the chest to the buttock of your horse (size B). We always indicate the sizes of horse blankets as follows: upper length/lower length . The last number is therefore the lower length that is most commonly used in the Netherlands. It is possible that an English size or upper length is stated in a blanket, this size therefore deviates from the lower lengths that you may be used to.
